Sneaking some rides in out West

Just returned from out West with Spiller where we managed to squeeze some mountain biking in. First ride was in Cottonwood Canyon just outside LasVegas. We hooked up with Las Vegas Cyclery (http://www.lasvegascyclery.com/) for rental bikes and a tour guide. If you are ever out in that area, I highly recommend them. The two hour ride was excellent, taking us over 5000’ and through the desert just outside the city. Having 60 degree temps was a nice change from the sub zero rides I have been doing back in Virginia. The final three miles called the “3 mile grin” lived up to its name. On the way back from Vegas we stopped over in California and managed to meet up with my brother who took is on a tour of some classic California single track. We rented bikes from The Path bike shop. I was hooked up with a new Specalized Stumpjumper FSR Expert 29er.  This will be the next bike I purchase. With a total elevation gain of 3,600’ our ride took us up to just over 5000’ feet.  We spent the majority of the morning riding up hill but the slog was worth it as we spent the last 14 miles all on downhill. We rode in an area that until recently had been closed since the 2007 fires so the trails were in great shape. Once again out riding in 60 degree temps which was nice.
